Candidacy

In fall of 2003, the Department of Recording Industry adopted new candidacy requirements for all majors. Aquiring candidacy by the student is required to enroll in most upper-division RIM courses. The new candidacy is as follows:

Minimum requirements for application to candidacy will be:

  • Completion of all developmental studies requirements.
  • Completion of all high school deficiencies.
  • Completion of 45 hours (not to include developmental studies courses).
  • Completion of math requirement (College Algebra of higher level math) with minimum 2.0 grade.
  • Completion of core courses (JOUR/EMC 1020, RIM 3000, RIM 3010, RIM 3600) with a minimum 2.0 grade in each.
  • Be a student in good standing (not on probation).

Note - General studies do not have to be completed to apply for candidacy.

Notes for the Audio Production & Technology concentration:

Even though RIM 1230 Musicianship for Engineers is not required for candidacy, it should be taken before candidacy since it is a prerequisite for sub-core courses required for the Audio Production & Technology concentration.

If a student takes MUTH 1110 Music Theory (required for a music minor), he or she does not take RIM 1230 Musicianship for Engineers. However, that student is required to take 3 additional hours of Audio Production & Technology electives (total of 18 hours rather than 15 hours).
